Teen dating violence
The Facts. Dating violence is a pattern of behavior where one person uses threats of, or actually uses, physical, sexual, verbal, or emotional abuse, to control his or her dating partner. Dating violence can include any person, regardless of gender, who is in an intimate relationship with another person primarily characterized by the expectation of affectionate involvement whether casual, serious, or long-term.
We define domestic violence as a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner.
What is teen dating violence?
Domestic violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, or psychological actions or threats of actions that influence another person. This includes any behaviors that intimidate, manipulate, humiliate, isolate, frighten, terrorize, coerce, threaten, blame, hurt, injure, or wound someone. Sexual assault is any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient.
Falling under the definition of sexual assault are sexual activities as forced sexual intercourse, forcible sodomy, child molestation, incest, fondling, and attempted rape. Sexual assault is forced, manipulated or coerced sexual contact. It includes rape, child sexual abuse, same-sex assault, acquaintance rape, harassment and marital rape.
The perpetrator uses sex to inflict physical and emotional violence and humiliation on the victim, or to exert power and control over the victim.
